The "Big Band de Canarias" is a group formed in the year 2008 by Kike Perdomo and Yul Ballesteros. The idea was to get together Canarian musicians who live both locally and abroad in a formation completely jazz orientated, and work with all kinds of themes, though always giving special importance to the local tradition. Managed by Ramón Cardo Serra, who is the current conductor of the "Vanguard Jazz Orchestra", the "Big Band" will present their first album titled Atlántida, which was recorded live at the Tenerife Auditorium last year. This disc features themes such as El Tango del Hierro, La Caldera by the group "Taburiente", A Valentina and Arrorró, as well as others by Oatts.
In its short lifespan "Big Band" has staged concerts in Madrid, Barcelona, Lugo, Tenerife, Gran Canaria & Berlín and has participated in the "Bundes Big Band Festival" in Bonn. "The presentation/performance by the "Big Band de Canarias" made it quite evident of the presence of a very promising formation, whose outstanding features were some highly disciplined musicians, loads of inspired solos, a repertoire which at all times distanced itself from the usual pattern and established good connection with the audience. No small thing to achieve for a "Big Band" which has just been born" was the description given by Sergio Zeni in the journal Cuadernos de Jazz, 2009
