BIOGRAPHIES

BlueInGreen is the latest group led by saxophonist Morgan Hernández (Puerto de la Cruz, 1960). Formed initially as a quartet, featuring Freddy Sánchez (drums), José Carlos Cejudo (bass) & Luis Merino (guitar), the band then added Miky Delgado (piano & synthesizer) and Víctor Galván (percussion), thus extending even more their range of sound & style. Influential factors are many, the foremost being modal jazz, funk, progressive rock of the 70s & 80s and acid rock; which when combined with the rich individual experience of all the members, give BlueInGreen quite a unique, uncategorised sound.

Charenée Wade is one of the most promising international jazz vocalists around. First Runner-Up in the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Vocal Competition and performer at the Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead Program, she was chosen as one of the talented four to take part at the Dianne Reeves Young Artist Workshop at Carnegie Hall. Her tone and majestic sound reminds us at times of classic jazz by artists like Betty Carter or Sarah Vaughan, controlling her voice with surprising agility & manner while incorporating personal touches that connect to current avant-garde jazz. Her second album, titled Offering (2015), is a tribute to the repertoire of an artist who had a big influence on her, Gil Scott-Heron. The disc features musicians Marcus Miller, Lonie Plaxico, Stefon Harris and Christian Mcbride.

Cory Henry (born February 1987) is the keyboard player of Snarky Puppy, a group that has updated & refreshed instrumental soul music like nobody today, and whose performances were experienced by the Canarian public during their earlier participation at the Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz&Más Heineken. A musician who is astonishing the world with his ability to revitalize instrumental R&B, an organist capable of delighting all kinds of audiences with his Hammond. This year the Gran Canaria Big Band celebrates its 20th anniversary. Active since the year 1997, this senior & respected Canarian ensemble was formed as a result of an initiative taken by a group of different musicians in the field of jazz in Gran Canaria, to get together and begin shaping a repertoire based on standard numbers and subsequently performing these at various concerts, both at festivals and music halls. A somewhat necessary ‘apprenticeship’ that led to their appearance at the “Festival Internacional de Jazz de Canarias” in the year 1999, sharing the stage with the excellent vocalist Carmen Lundy; a performance that had resounding success. This year, on their 20th anniversary tour, they will perform at prominent festivals & music halls: Canaries Jazz Festival, Valencia Jazz Festival, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Madrid, Canarias Jazz Time, Cuyás Theatre, Alfredo Kraus Auditorium …

Maria João has collaborated and toured with a number of artists of world renown, such as Gilberto Gil, Christofer Lauer, Bob Stenso and of course, Mário Laginha.  In the year 2001 she began working with a group led by Joe Zawinul, ex-keyboard player of the mythical Weather Report. De la raíz al aire is the latest work by Canarian musician Paco Perera, in which he immerses his roots in Canarian folklore. The acoustic tones of the contrabass, the piano, the laud (type of lute) and the timple come together and blend with electric sounds being backed by a rhythm section which is a combination of drums & traditional percussion: local type of snare drums from the islands of Hierro & Gomera (tambores herreños y gomeros) and local type of castanets (chácaras). From the deconstruction of the structural elements of folklore and incorporation of contemporary sounds emerges this new product with a marked Canarian identity. Bassist, contrabassist & composer, Perera can boast of having  extensive experience in a varied number of genres, such as jazz, Canarian folklore, Latin music, flamenco, etc. etc. He has worked with figures like Lucrecia, Lole Montoya, among others.

In 2011, he launched his latest album, titled Boiling Earth with his band Polo Ortí Group.

Powafunk was formed in the year 2015, a new group with a musical concept & formula that combined original compositions with energy and influences of some of the genre’s great artists. This band from Barcelona released its first disc, titled Powafunk with the intention of getting everyone up on the dance-floor. In this spectacular adventure, African rhythms played on drums feature strongly with dancers & acrobats taking their place on stage to fill the show. Souñou Yon (Nuestro Camino/Our Path) gives us an insight into the musical adventure that the Thioune brothers started years ago, with the participation of international musicians like the German artist Torsten Winkel.
