The Atlantic Jazz Ensemble is a creation of the Atlantic Jazz Lab (Laboratorio Atlántico de Jazz y Nuevas Músicas – Atlantic Laboratory of Jazz & New Music), established with the aim of forming a regular group which would assist in developing, conserving & fostering the creation & pursuit of jazz in, for and from the Canary Islands. All this under the artistic direction of Natanael Ramos, founder of the Laboratory and one of the most outstanding Canarian musicians on the European jazz scene.
From the year 2016 this ensemble has been leaving its mark on the public around the islands with a series of different itinerant projects, like the monograph of the album Round Midnight by Miles Davis, and since the end of 2017 with the project which they will present at this edition of the festival: The Music Of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Also, in 2018 they performed in the opening of an artistic residency in the Castillo de San Felipe (San Felipe Castle) in Puerto de la Cruz, with the backing of its Town Hall and the Tenerife Cabildo (Island Council), thus making them a pioneer group to accomplish this in the whole country.
The Music Of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers is a review of the entire career of one of the most iconic US jazz bands of the XXth century and birthplace to some of jazz’s greats, such as Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley, Bobby Timmons, Lou Donaldson, Kenny Dorham and Wynton Marsalis, among others. With an endless supply of great hits like One By One, Time Will Tell, Moanin, etc., the Atlantic Jazz Ensemble will take us on a trip through the different phases of Blakey’s band.
Together with Natanael Ramos on trumpet, the other members of the Atlantic Jazz Ensemble are Canarian musicians from different jazz sections, namely Claudio Marrero on tenor sax, Francis Hernández on piano, Jose Carlos Machado on contrabass and Nasim López-Palacios on drums.
