Born in Barcelona, Carme Canela is one of the most renowned vocalists on the Spanish jazz scene.
Her musical career spans collaborations with both international & national jazz musicians, such as Guillermo Klein, Bruce Barth, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Perico Sambeat, Lluís Vidal, Joan Albert Amargós, David Mengual, Horacio Fumero, Gorka Benítez, Jordi Bonell, Jordi Matas, Carles Benavent, Bernardo Sassetti, Robert Ashley & Agustí Fernández.
She has also participated with various groups, like the ‘Orquesta del Teatre Lliure’, the ‘Big Band Jazz de Terrassa’, the ‘Big Band del Taller de Músics’, the ‘Albert Guinovart Ensemble’ and the ‘Orquesta Nacional de Cámara’ (National Chamber Orchestra) of Andorra.
Canela has toured countries that include Italy, Portugal, Morocco, Israel, France, Argentina & Uruguay.
She has also performed at the prestigious Village Vanguard in New York, alongside Guillermo Klein and the Los Guachos, and in Zankel Hall of New York’s Carnegie Hall.
She has received many awards: the JAÇ for the best new proposal for her CD titled Carme Canela canta Jordi Matas, given by the magazine “Enderrock” (2011); “Vocalist of the Year” given by the ‘Asociación de Músicos de Jazz de Cataluña’ on seven differenet occasions (1993, 1995, 1998 & 2000-2003); award for “Catalonian CD of the Year” given by Radio 4 for Introducing Carme Canela & Trio and Cravo e Canela in the years 1997 & 2000 respectively and ‘Premio ARC’ in the jazz & new trends category in the year 2004.
She is currently a teacher of “Canto Moderno y Jazz” (Contemprary Singing & Jazz) at the “Escuela Superior de Música de Cataluña” and also at the “Conservatorio del Liceo” in Barcelona.
