There is nothing China Moses likes more than to embrace the classics in order to explore them to their confines, redirect from their natural route and take them to the very limit of their possibilities. After playing with The Great American Songbook, she returns with a new project where she builds her own playground with twelve songs that sound like standards, but picks up the testimony of her ancestors and takes them to the next level.
China Moses is one of the very rare young ladies of her generation to come back to “up tempos” and the swing of the 40s. On this occasion she is surrounded by a band of extraordinary and surprisingly versatile musicians. With this new disc, she is re-writing the XXI century jazz singers’ mythology, coming from a cosmic cabaret in a galaxy far, far away.
Whatever is the title of her new EP, a pre-runner to her new album, Breaking Point. Put together & co-produced by British producer Anthony Marshall (Craig David, Nelly Furtado), China and him have joined forces, creativity & musical influences; Whatever is soul, it’s jazz, it’s blues and it’s funk.
For its part, Breaking Point is one of the most ambitious projects to be undertaken by the artist, where in addition to her facet as a singer, she features as composer. In her own words: “it is a very special work, an assertion of my sound”.
China has collaborated with artists of the calibre of Me’shell Ndegeocello and Camille, and more recently the “Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa”, with whom she staged two very special concerts within the programme ‘365 Jazz Bilbao’. Her extensive recording career, in spite of her youth (already has six albums released), added to her unique voice, interpretation of pieces and stage presence, the ability to connect & communicate with the audience, have all contributed to placing her on a list of favourites for many vocal jazz fans.
