“If I was born again, I would like to be Hermeto Pascoal”, said Miles Davis.
Hermeto Pascoal is a Brazilean composer and multi-instrumentalist; a veritable history of XX century music and known by many as the sorcerer of music.
He was born in the northeast of Brazil and learnt to play the flute and accordion as a child.
This sextet of musicians, plus Hermeto, thus making it a septet, have been together for about fifteen years. Some of them have spent more than twentyfive years working with one another. Their music oscillates between lyrical & romantic to garishly resounding; from folklore to futuristic angular melodies, frequently creating a dense sound barrier. On occasions the band uses synthesizers & saxophones, as well as a wide range of instruments invented by Hermeto, such as teacups, plastic pigs, frying pans, etc. All guided by the energetic spirit & magic of the composer.
Hermeto’s compositions feature in albums by Miles Davis and Sergio Mendes, apart from a host of other recordings by other jazz greats. He has also composed three symphonies, made endless recordings with instruments of his own creation and features in catalogues of various recording label companies.
