Julien Tassin’s music is in the image of the way he plays: sincere, clear and borderless. His guitar tone is gentle and lyrical but wild at the same time. He takes different genres but gives them back in his own personal way, composing a repertoire that is remarkably varied but still homogeneous. All his compositions are marked by the particular ‘timbre’ of his instrument and his original phrasing. With a consistent dedication to strong melodies and beautiful themes, he creates an original musical language drawing influences from blues to rock and jazz.
Accompanied by two of Belgian’s best musicians, double-bassist Lennart Heyndels and drummer Dré Pallemaerts, Julien reveals a distinctive musical personality. Outstanding soloists, they play with simplicity & clarity, flexingtheir art to suit the compositions & ambience. Formed at the Sounds Jazz Club in Brussels, in september 2018 the trio released their first album together titled Sweet Tension on the‘Igloo Records’ label; an album that invites us to their light/dark electric universe.
Originally from Charleroi, Julien discovered music in a family of music lovers. Unconditional fans of the Beatles, his uncles offered him his first guitar at the age of eight which led him to discover the blues a few years later. While performing with groups in the region, he spent his days at the local media library where he discovered jazz. His love for the music of John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and so many others, gradually diverted him from classical learning. The rhythm, harmonic richness and freedom of jazz intrigued and fascinated him.
Eager for discoveries, he entered the Royal Conservatory of Brussels where he studied guitar under Paolo Radoni. He left with a degree and a vocabulary that he always wanted to incorporateinto his own musical language. An eclectic guitarist, he was first noticed playing with The Crazy Moondog Band alongside bassist Daniel Romeo and musicians such as Eric Legnini, Christophe, Panzani and Rosario Giuliani
Co-founder with his cousin of the rock band Run SOFA, Julien is also a solo performer. In the autumn of 2019, he premiered his solo project at BOZAR in Brussels. All these experiences enable him to define a unique style of composition and playing that borrows as much from blues as it does from jazz and rock.
