Luis Merino was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and having set off in music playing in a few different Canarian groups, moved to Madrid in the year 1999.
There he studied the guitar & composition at various schools and had private tuition before going to London, where he graduated at the University of Middlesex, obtaining a BA in Jazz.
He has trained with some well-known prestigious teachers, such as Mike Outram, Nikki Iles, Stuart Hall, Rob Towsend and Jonathan Kreisberg. He has never stopped studying and continues widening his scope of knowledge, attending a number of courses, seminars & masterclasses held by teachers & professors, like Lage Lund,Gilad Heselman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ari Hoenig and Will Vinson.
On his return to the Canaries, he formed part of the faculty at the ‘Escuela Municipal de Música’ (Municipal School of Music) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he gives classes in “Guitarra y Armonía Moderna” (Guitar & Modern Harmony). At the same time, he has become a regular musician on the Canarian musical scene, participating in numerous groups that cover a host of musical styles as well as jazz.
Founder of some and collaborator in others, we can see him playing with well established bands on the islands, namely, Ni Funk Ni Fank, Biphasic, Funk Odyssey, Victor Lemes, Gran Canaria Big Band, Revamp, Playlist and Blue in Green, among others. He is currently presenting his first recorded work, titled Blacky, in which, in addition to jazz, it incorporates traces of styles that have influenced him, like rock or Drum & Bass.
