Michael League, bassist, composer, founder & leader of Snarky Puppy, will do a summer 2020 world tour with his new group, Michael League & Friends, an ensemble of the first order composed of incredible musicians such as the eclectic Magda Giannikou (Banda Magda) keyboard playerJustin Stanton (Snarky Puppy) and percussionist Adri Trujillo (Antonio Lizana).
During the concert the band will take a trip through a repertoire which features the more well-known pieces by Snarky Puppy &Banda Magda, together with some unknown ones composed for the occasion. Magda’s voice, accompanied by herself on the accordion, Michael’s bass, Adri’s percussion beats and Justin’s keyboards will create moments of great harmony, virtuosity & rhythm that will prove to be an unforgettable experience for the audience.
League, three-time Grammy Award winner, resides in Brooklyn. He is the creator of the instrumental music band Snarky Puppy and is also a member of the World-Music group Bokanté, as well as co-owner of Atlantic Sound Studios, and founder of the record label GroundUP Music.
Michael attended the University of North Texas’ jazz studies programme for four years, then moved to nearby Dallas for another three, where he worked with some of the most influential figures in modern gospel, R&B, and soul music, and was mentored by legendary keyboardist Bernard Wright (Miles Davis, Chaka Khan), before moving to Brooklyn (NewYork) in 2009. As an instrumentalist & producer he has worked with a wide range of artists: David Crosby, Laura Mvula, Lalah Hathaway, Joe Walsh, Kirk Franklin, Walter Hawkins, Marvin Sapp, Israel Houghton, Terence Blanchard, Esperanza Spalding, Joshua Redman, Wayne Krantz, Chris Potter, Salif Keïta, Eliades Ochoa (Buena Vista Social Club), Susana Baca, Carlos Malta, Väsen; thus touching on almost all types of contemporary music, blues, rock, pop, jazz, gospel, world music..
In the year 2016 he formed the band Bokanté, in which the influence of blues combines with rock, Caribbean music and West African musical styles.The ensemble features a star cast of musicians from four different continents. Bokanté went on a world tour in 2017 presenting their first album, titled Strange Circles. Their second one, What Heat (2018) was recorded in collaboration with the ‘Metropole Orkest’ Grammy-winning orchestra.
The ‘GroundUP Music’ record label which was created in 2011, started out as an independent company releasing albums by David Crosby, Charlie Hunter, Becca Stevens, Cory Henry and Banda Magda. It also organises an annual ‘GroundUP’ music festival since the year 2017, held in Miami Beach (Florida), which has featured the participation of artists such as Béla Fleck, Esperanza Spalding, The Wood Brothers, Robert Glasper, Concha Buika, Terence Blanchard, Joshua Redman, Jacob Collier,Chris Thile, Knower & Pedrito Martinez, among others.
Michael is passionately committed to music education and outreach, having given Master classes at over 200 schools all over the world and works regularly with non-profit making organisations to support the community through the arts.
