Michael Olivera was born in Santa Clara (Cuba), a central area of the island. He finished his music studies at the National School of Art (ENA, La Havana) and, from an early age, has developed a long and intense professional career. He is one of the most important artists on the current Cuban & Spanish music scene. In spite of his young age, he boasts a fairly extensive career as drummer, producer, composer & arranger.
Michael Olivera recorded his first work as a bandleader, Ashé; a word that derives from the Yoruba (Afro-Cuban) language, and whose meaning is “Divine Blessing”. After the success of Ashé, staging more than 40 concerts all over Spain in just one year, Olivera presents us with his new work, Oasis, a live album which is characterised by its gaiety, force and the Cuban touch; a clear demonstration of the experience of the artist and his accompanying musicians, all leaders of their own respective groups.
Fifty recorded discs and hundreds of projects Oliviera has participated in, speak for themselves of the artist; and he has also performed at such important festivals as Jazz a Vienne, Marciac, North Sea Jazz, Montroux Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Fest, Blue Note NY, Blue Note Tokio, Jakarta Jazz Festival, War- saw Jazz Festival, Madrid Jazz Festival, Barcelona Jazz Festival and many more.
He has played with renowned artists & producers, such as Quincy Jones, Alfredo Rodriguez Tocororo (co-arranger), Rick Wakeman, Javier Colina, Sting, Tomatito, Munir Hossn, Yonathan Avishai, Sintesis, among others.
