Soul singer & composer resident in England known as Myles Sanko, made his debut with an EP titled Born in Black & White in 2013, which was acclaimed by critics & public alike. The disc consists of seven original tracks inspired by the style of some of soul music’s greats, such as Bill Withers, Otis redding, Al Green & James Brown; Myles openly and proudly acknowledging them as his main musical influences. A work that combines to perfection deep grooves and jazz, Born in Black & White is truly the departure point of a remarkable & prolific musical career.
Dubbed “The Lovechild of Soul Music”, Myles began his journey singing & rapping alongside DJs in nightclubs. He has fronted some popular bands, like ‘Bijoumiyo’ and ‘Speedometer’.
In order to select an appropriate collection of compositions for professional recording in the studio, Myles uploaded live videos of himself giving acoustic performances, on the internet. He then invited his group of fans throughout Europe to give their opinions regarding which tracks would best fit his debut EP release. This interactive spirit, which has guided Myles’ solo career to date, reveals much about his humanist spirit, genial character and artistic integrity. Myles returned to the studio to record his second album, titled Forever Dreaming, financed entirely by his fans, utilising the platform ‘PledgeMusic’.
With his third album, Sanko adds another chapter to his particular and intense trip. “Just Being Me speaks of love, hope and policy and has a piece of me in every part,” he says.
Multitalented artists of such high level are a rarity today; he describes himself as a songwriter who is having fun creating, which brings about a result that is very honest; hand-made work, with his own hallmark from beginning to end. He composes and writes the lyrics, rhythms & melodies; his hobby is photography, designing his own album covers and he also records and edits the video clips.
After years of working with the same musicians divided between Cambridge and London, with whom he has performed in over 200 concerts in Europe, the recordings in the studio gave life to their ideas. They got to know, love and admire each other; they enjoyed playing together very much and this they conveyed in the songs, blending rhythms ahiphopats with lines more jazzy, a soulful aura and the use of classic instruments such as the violin or the cello. “I decided to go for a classic jazz production but keeping it soulful and seriously groovy. I wanted to capture my musical journey from my youthful hip-hop beginnings through to my re-discovery of soul and now jazz. I have tried to reflect my current times, while taking my fans to a new and exciting place”, explains Myles.
“Just Being Me is a departure from what I did before and a beginning of a new journey. It is about myself as a human being, as it is about sharing between each other”, says Myles. “As a songwriter or musician you have the ultimate tool that you can share with others, as recorded music or on the stage. And as an artist you can make the most of this rare gift”.
