NAYABAND is a music ensemble formed & led by a musician of Senegalese origin, Nayaban Jean. Taking African music & rhythms as their root, this eclectic band has evolved a selection of different genres such as reggae, jazz, pop, blues and African rhythms like mbalax, soukonss & beugeurebo. In addition, this hybrid music group has enriched its presence by the use of different languages in their songs, like French, English & Spanish and Senegalese dialects, such as wolof & mankagne.
Nayaban Jean founded NAYABAND in 2005 after working several years in Gran Canaria with the bands Banor-Z, Mystic Vibes & Afro Accoustic Experience. In 2008 he released his first disc titled Globalización, with which he spent the next three years on tour all around Spain. His second album, titled Hope was presented in 2011, and got a magnificent reception in the most important national media, among them being RTVE 2, on Radio 3 live concerts, and in newspapers like El País. Subsequently, he has been expanding his spectrum of festivals at which the band has participated, such as the Canarias Jazz & Más Heineken, Rototom Sunsplash European Reggae Festival, África Vive, Espal and Fuertemúsica. This has enabled the band to share the stage with respected figures on the international music scene, like Gangbe Brass Band, Fatoumata Diawara, Touré Kunda, Santiago Auserón, Pedro Guerra, José Antonio Ramos, Macaco, Sargento García, Germán López ….
In June 2018 NAYABAND released their third disc, Plus d’amour. With a more personal musical concept, they venture into a new world of African sounds where instruments like the kora, the violin and contrabass el violín play a supporting role to the voice & guitar of Nayaban Jean. This latest album has been the winner in the category ‘Mejor disco de Músicas de Raíz’ (Best Root Music Album), at the Premios Canarios de la Música (Canaries Music Awards) 2019.
