Pianist and composer of classical music training, he showed a great ability to improvise from a very early age, which little by little led him into the world of jazz; while studying at the Conservatory of Music at the same time. Since then, he has been training and practically educating himself in this genre.
He has released two discs titled Espacio and Tempo Presente, made up of his own compositions. The second one, which is in a double format of CD & DVD, will be presented by him at the twentyfifth edition of the Festival. Recorded live at the Tenerife Auditorium, in this album Samuel Labrador has wanted to get closer to the classic format of the standards, laying less emphasis on form & structure of the compositions, and giving more importance to development & expansion in the field of improvisation. In this second disc, he was accompanied by bassist Felu Morales and drummer J. Miguel Méndez “Churchi” , the same trio who will perform at the Festival.
Labrador has played with some prestigious musicians both on national & international jazz scenes: Jeff Galindo (Jazz Festival-Ecuador 2010), Greg Badolato (Quito 2010), Jorge Pardo (Room 26-S/C in Tenerife 2012), and Kike Perdomo (Roots Tour-2015), and has shared the stage as the opening-act with some top class artists: Bill Evans (VII Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz&Más Heineken), Melissa Aldana (Lago Martiánez- Pto. De La Cruz 2012), Kurt Rosenwinkel New Quartet (IV Jazz Otoño (Autumn Jazz-Gran Canaria), Ernie Watts & Sharrie Williams (XXII Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz&Más Heineken) and Zara McFarlane (XXIV Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz&Más Heineken).
Both in his group as a trio or as a solo performer, the pianist has offered recitals at a number of different festivals, such as ‘Espacio Cultural El Tanque’ (2009), XXII FICJ&MH, Canarias Jazz-Showroom (2010-2013), Autumn Jazz (Gran Canaria 2013), La Palma Jazz Festival (2013), Tenerife Auditorium (2014), Casa Roja Museum (La Palma 2014), San Agustín Convent (Lanzarote 2014), and ‘I Festival Vijazz Liceo de Taoro’ (La Orotava-2015).
During the academic year 2009-10, he was co-ordinator of the Piano Department at the ‘Instituto de Música Contemporánea’n (Institute of Contemporary Music) at the ‘Universidad San Francisco’ (San Francisco University) in Quito (Ecuador), which forms part of the Berklee College of Boston International Network. And in the year 2013 he performed together with the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Firman, with renditions programmed as “The Best of Broadway” & “The Best of British”.
He is a member of the Latin Jazz-Fusion band “Atcheré”, with whom he has participated at many different national festivals.
Currently he is preparing his third album, and is combining his academic side to promote his second album Tempo Presente, and in the role of Artistic Director at the ‘II Festival Vijazz-Liceo de Taoro’.
