The twentyfifth edition of the Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más Heineken enters its final week with a programme packed with twentytwo concerts shared between the islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria & Lanzarote.

On Thursday 21 July, the Festival goes to Puerto de la Cruz for the first time in this edition, staging a triple open-air & free-entrance concert to be held in the public square ‘Plaza de Europa’, starting at 20.00 hours; featuring three musical ensembles performing a cross-section of funk, soul and R&B, fusion and the innovation of XXI century jazz.

Jon Cleary, is the maestro of New Orleans native funk. Accomplished keyboard player & guitarrist with a deeply poignant voice, he is highly skilled in his ability to play the oboe.
The versatile artist comes to the Festival with his recently released Grammy-winning album, titled ‘Gogo Juice’. A disc with a sound loyal to the city he loves, traditional ethnic funk of New Orleans.

He has a unique & ecclectic style, which ranges between R&B, funk and soul. Jon Cleary has spent thirtyfive years on stage. He is a well respected musician who has been praised by some genuine R&B icons of New Orleans, such as Dr John and Allen Toussaint.

Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah (New Orleans, Louisiana 1983) has released eight critically acclaimed studio albums and two live ones since the year 2002. NPR (USA’s national radio channel) stated that this virtuoso of the trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn & soprano trombone, ushered in a new era of jazz. And the ‘JazzTimes’ magazine heralded him as the architect of a new commercially viable fusion, referring to him as “Jazz’s young style God”.

Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah is an innovator and is known for his use of an unvoiced tone in his playing, emphasizing breath over vibration at the mouthpiece, widely referred to as his whisper technique; and is also considered as one of the progenitors of “Stretch Music”, a jazz-rooted, blind musical form attempting to ‘stretch’ jazz rhythmic, melodic & harmonic conventions to encompass as many other musical forms, languages and cultures as possible.

Scott comes to the Festival with his latest album, aptly named after this very technique ‘Stretch Music’.

American-Spanish percussionist Jorge Pérez is the leader of the band Patax. A musician who pursues the ambitious goal of taking fusion to a new level, picking up the baton laid by bands, such as Weather Report, Hermeto Pascoal, Herbie Hancock, Zawinul Syndicate, Irakere, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis & Paco de Lucía.
The band’s fusion of Latin-jazz, flamenco, funk & Afro-Cuban folklore is produced by some of the best international new generation jazz musicians resident in Spain, with their own surprising complex and magical recipe of these genres.
Patax has already performed in this twentyfifth edition of the Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más Heineken, in La Palma (8 July) and Fuerteventura (9 July), and will stage performances on Thursday 21 in Puerto de la Cruz de Tenerife and on Friday 22 in LPGC.
The band’s line-up for these last two concerts will be: Jorge López, percussion; Federico Lechner, piano; Valetín Iturat, drums; Alana Sinkey, vocals; Carlos Sánchez, bass; Daniel García, keyboards; Roberto Pacheco, trombone; Raúl Gil, trumpet; Rafael Aguila, saxophone; Dani Morales, timbal and Lidón Patiño, dance routine.
